BONDEY FARM

Brief profile

Bondey farm was established in March, 1966 by Late Dasho Keiji Nishioka for production of vegetables and other horticulture crops for improving the livelihood and nutrition of Bhutanese people. With the establishment of Bondey farm, agricultural development activities increased with introduction of numbers of vegetables, fruits and farm mechanization in the agriculture farming practices of Bhutan. Bondey farm is located next to Agriculture Machinery Centre at Bondey at an altitude of 2200 masl. The farm is presently managed by Farm Manager and 13 farm labourers and has a total area of 13 acres. In the past only 4 acres of land were used for the production of vegetable seeds and seedlings, as most part of the land were occupied by the fruit trees and some did not have  irrigation facility. In 2014-15 financial year, the farm has developed about 4 acres area for seed production with provision of improved pump irrigation facility.

 

Responsibilities

  • Focal farm for production of vegetable seeds (cabbage, radish, onions, beans) and asparagus seedlings.
  • Production and maintenance of basic and foundation seeds of focal crops.
  • Responsible for production of certified seeds of focal crops in collaboration with the Registered Seed Growers of Paro Dzongkhag.
